Instant Messaging (IM)
Online IM started a few years before the Internet became popular:
DARPA for work-related exchanges (1980s),
Teleview (early 1990s),
IRC (mid 1990s),
ICQ (late 1990s),
MSN/Yahoo/AOL/etc...
If you haven't heard, gMail has a new instant messaging function as well! It's quite a breeze to use albeit a tad simple (no graphics, no attachments) but it's reliable and fast.
I'm particularly impressed because i can now chat during my breakfast/lunch/dinner breaks! Currently at work the installed version of MSN Messenger is blocked (ie: can only log in using WEB Messenger which is slow and unstable), but gMail Chat is not blocked so i can now check my mails and chat (during my breaks)!
So what are you waiting for? Log in to gMail and chat with me!
Thick skinned eh? =P
